School Name – Freedom Academy Charter School

School Address – 3916 East Paradise Lane, Phoenix AZ 85032

Phone Number – (602) 424-0771

How long has your school been open? – Almost 20 years!

About how many children are served? – 360+ students

What grades does your school currently offer? K – 8

How did your school begin, and what are some of the reasons it was started?

Our school started out as Point of Light Academy and was a very small Christian school that was sharing a building with Oasis Community Church in Scottsdale. That name was eventually changed to Freedom Academy about a year later as we transitioned to a public charter school.

Why do you personally feel your school is a great option for Arizona families?

I feel our school is a fantastic option for Arizona families. If your family is looking for smaller class sizes with loving and dedicated teachers, Freedom Academy is the place. Yes we are small in size compared to other schools, however, we do not lack focus or cognizance of our students and their families. Freedom Academy is truly a second family.

What makes your school unique, and how do you meet the unique needs of your students?

In my opinion, Freedom Academy is unique from most schools in two ways. The first, as I mentioned in the previous response, is our approach to intentionally serving the whole student AND their family. For many of our teachers and staff, parents are not just “parents”, but rather close acquaintances or even friends. Communication is easy, continual, open, and constructive from the teachers and the families. The second is Freedom’s intentional dedication to honoring our country, our military, and all first responders. You can see this dedication at Freedom Academy a number of ways such as when we start each day with the Pledge of Allegiance, students wear their red and blue school uniforms, pass by their First Responders dedication board, etc… Both of these qualities are very quickly evident when arriving on campus.

What makes your school a place that teachers want to be at?

At Freedom Academy teachers are given space. Yes we make sure Arizona State Standards and school policies are being practiced, but our teachers have the freedom to teach these practices through their personalities and experiences. At Freedom Academy we let teachers personalities shine to get the most from them and ultimately give the most to our students. Another reason Freedom Academy is a place teachers want to be is again our family atmosphere. We have many teachers who workout together, go to sporting events together, work at church together, or just meet up for a night of good times together. Freedom Academy is not a school where teachers check in and check out without checking on each other. Just ask to look at our “Substitute Reflection Forms’ from substitute teachers on how their experiences were filling in for one of our teachers!

What does a day in the life of a typical student at your school look like?

Students who arrive to school early will be greeting each other and playing on the field or playground. At 8:00 sharp students begin to line up for morning announcements and “Pledge of Allegiance”. From here students walk with their teacher and class to begin their morning routines. All classes are taught common core subjects such as Math, ELA, Social Studies, and Science. In these subjects, Freedom Academy attempts to be as hands on and collaborative as possible each day. In between these classes all students receive various electives such as Typing, PE, Digital Design, Art, etc… The school day ends with classes packed and prepared to have their name called for our pick-up procedures.

What are some of the characteristics you would say describe the students / environment at your school?

I would describe most of our students as engaging and respectful. To get our students engaged in daily individual or collaborative lessons, fundraisers, after school events, etc… is not hard. They want to please their teachers and they want to please their school. They know as a result of their engagement they will be showered with praise by teachers and friends. Our students are respectful. With that, our students definately make some of the same typical mistakes all kids make, but Freedom Academy students are quick to apologize and quick to learn from a situation. They are respectful of teachers and Administrators life lessons and quickly try to implement them into their days.

What is something you’d like to make sure we know about your school, or something that you would like prospective families to know?

We would really like to drive home to prospective parents that each and everyday we are blessed to have your child in our classroom, they are not just a name or number. Teachers know these kids are entrusted to us to protect, love, and educate as if they were our own child.

What’s the best way for families to talk to someone if they are interested in your school? Who should they contact?

Many ways they can get in touch with Freedom Academy! The best may be simply calling our incredible Front Office ladies (Beth, Andrea, and/or Teri). If prospective families are trying to reach Freedom Academy after school hours we can be reached on almost any social media platform (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snap, and YouTube… @FreedomEaglesAZ). We have a really quick response time on all those platforms.

What else would you like to add? Anything you want parents to know?

I love my school. I started working here 15 years ago as a single guy who had just moved here from Philadelphia. I am now, again, in my 15th year now married with two kids; both of whom now attend Freedom Academy. Freedom Academy has and is a big part of many teachers, students, and families lives as it has been mine.
