Growing up, were you ever told NOT to use your fingers to count in math? What about the fear that using a computer will keep your child from learning to read and write? How about the idea that learning through games promotes laziness and prevents kids from learning “hard-work” skills needed to succeed in school and life? If you’ve heard or experienced these and other bits of “advice” from others, it may have you second-guessing yourself or your child and how they learn. Many kids have different learning styles, and struggle in some areas that others may not. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

For example, some children with learning disabilities benefit from using a computer to type instead of writing by hand. Others can successfully navigate their work better when they listen to it, versus reading the textbook on their own. Many children with sensory processing disorders benefit from a multi-sensory approach to topics like math and benefit from educational games and tools. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Is your child struggling to learn to read? Do they find it difficult to sound out words? Do they forget sight - words, even from one page to the next? Do they seem to feel sick, tired, angry or frustrated when required to read or write? Do they misspell words regularly or flip certain letters and numbers? Do they use capital letters in place of lowercase, sometimes in the middle of a word? Is there a parent or family member who struggled to read or was diagnosed with dyslexia? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

If you suspect your child may have a learning disability in reading, did you know Love Your School can help you request an evaluation from your local district school? This option is available to homeschooling AND private school students. If your child already has a 504 plan, an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or a MET report (Multidisciplinary education team evaluation) which showed they qualified for special education services, then you may be eligible for an Arizona Empowerment Scholarship account to cover therapy services, curriculum, private school, tutors, and more!
